CONCERT BANDS

During the spring semester, the marching band splits into three ability-based concert bands. These ensembles rehearse during the school day and present several public performances during the semester. Course descriptions, current repertoire, and other information is located under each ensemble.

Concert 1
Wind Symphony

The Wind Symphony is the premier concert band in the Willard band program. Membership is extended to the most advanced musicians by audition. The Wind Symphony rehearses and performs a varied repertoire ranging from standard literature to contemporary new works for wind band.

Members of the Wind Symphony also participate in All-District and All-State ensembles, district and state level Solo/Ensemble festivals, and many other performance opportunities outside of the typical large ensemble setting.

Concert 2
Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band meets during second hour. Typically the largest concert ensemble in the Willard band program, the Symphonic Band rehearses and performs a variety of styles and genres of music focused on refining tone production, advancing technical skills, and providing an introduction to contemporary composition styles and techniques.

Members of the Symphonic Band are encouraged to audition for All-District honor groups and prepare a solo or small ensemble for district festival. The band presents several public performances during the spring semester.

Concert 3
Concert Band

The Concert Band is a high school ensemble that is a continuation of the Willard Instrumental Music Program. The purpose of this ensemble is to develop fundamental musical skills-both as an individual and as an ensemble- that are crucial to the continuation of growth in the high school musician. It is our mission to ensure that we are not only shaping quality musicians, but also aiding in the development of strong contributors to society.  Although our rehearsals focus on their musical development, our students will learn the values and rewards of teamwork, perseverance, professionalism, and a balance of pride and humility through their practice and performance.  We encourage students to present the best of themselves at each rehearsal, so that we may teach them to the best of our ability!

practice drone

INTONATION. Probably one of the biggest problems within the wind band is dealing with intonation.  We talk about the "big three" concepts: in TIME, in TUNE, and in TONE.  This drone will help you play better in tune with the ensemble.  Play your scales, etudes, and even your music against the drone for the concert key you're in.  Practice, practice, practice.
