CONCERT BANDS

During the spring semester, the marching band splits into three ability-based concert bands. These ensembles rehearse during the school day and present several public performances during the semester. Course descriptions, current repertoire, and other information is located under each ensemble.

Concert 1
Wind Symphony

The Wind Symphony is the premier concert band ensemble at Willard High School and is comprised of the most advanced musicians in the band program. Students in this ensemble perform the highest level of concert band literature, emphasizing advanced individual musicianship, refined ensemble performance, and artistic expression. Instruction focuses on tone quality, intonation, balance and blend, technical accuracy, and musical interpretation.

The Wind Symphony participates in the MSHSAA State Large Ensemble Festival and presents a public concert in April. Students may also choose to participate in the district solo/ensemble festival and audition for All-District honor groups.

Concert 2
Symphonic Band

The Symphonic Band is the intermediate concert band at Willard High School and is designed to build upon the musical foundations developed in earlier band experiences. Students perform a wide range of literature, including classical, contemporary, and educational concert works, with increasing technical and musical demands. Emphasis is placed on continued development of tone production, rhythmic accuracy, ensemble balance, and expressive performance.

The Symphonic Band participates in the MSHSAA State Large Ensemble Festival and presents a public concert in April. Students may also choose to participate in the district solo/ensemble festival. Members of the Symphonic Band are also encouraged to audition for All-District honor groups.

Concert 3
Concert Band

The Concert Band is the foundational high school concert band at Willard High School and serves as a bridge from middle school band to more advanced high school ensembles. Instruction emphasizes fundamental skills such as tone production, proper technique, music literacy, and ensemble performance. Students perform appropriately challenging concert band literature while developing confidence and musicianship in a large ensemble setting.

practice drone

INTONATION. Probably one of the biggest problems within the wind band is dealing with intonation.  We talk about the "big three" concepts: in TIME, in TUNE, and in TONE.  This drone will help you play better in tune with the ensemble.  Play your scales, etudes, and even your music against the drone for the concert key you're in.  Practice, practice, practice.
